Memorial Art Galley Masterplan

CJS Architects has been retained by the University of Rochester to develop a masterplan to chart the future for the Memorial Art Gallery Campus (MAG) in Rochester New York. The MAG was founded in 1913 and given in trust to the University of Rochester and is the focal point of fine arts activity in the Rochester and Finger Lakes region. 

The MAG mission, vision and values are:

Mission Statement - Through art, MAG connects people, inspires fun, and ignites discovery.
Vision - As the center of the conversation on creativity, MAG builds community and enriches the way we see ourselves and the world around us.
Values - MAG stands for: Art and Culture; Learning and Joy; Accessibility and Inspiration; Stewardship and Integrity; and Community and Sociability.


The fourteen-acre Memorial Art Gallery Campus includes:

  • 1913 Italian Renaissance style building, by the New York firm of Foster, Gade and Graham,
  • 1226 wing designed by McKim, Mead & White which added the central Fountain Court.
  • 1933 Cutler Union by Architects Gordon and Kaelber.
  • 1968 International Style addition by Waasdorp, Northrup and Kaelber.
  • 1986 entrance pavilion and skylit sculpture garden designed by Frank S. Grosso.


CJS Architects is leading this Master Planning effort and working in collaboration with Mark Bayer Landscape Architects, G & A Strategy and Design, and MAG leadership.
